The Amwell’s First Ladies’ Day
This month, The Amwell Care Home in Leicestershire hosted an event that was the first of its kind for our home; Ladies' Day.
Inspired by the events usually hosted at popular horse-racing venues, our activities team decided to host its very own for our ladies here at The Amwell.
The days' event began with 'horse races' in our landscaped gardens. Staff dressed as jockeys and rode on hobby horses, and the residents got involved by rolling the dice to direct the staff in how many steps to take forward. The first person to the finish line was crowned our winner.
To ensure residents got the full experience, we played race day audios in the background to really set the scene for the real thing. The races continued in the afternoon but in between we had 3 visitors; Lily, Molly, and Trudy.
Lily rode Molly in dressage around the garden and car park for all to enjoy and residents who wished to got up, said hello and gave a stroke. Residents enjoyed sipping on prosecco and pimms with fresh fruit and snacks throughout the day.
In true Ladies' Day fashion, our residents and staff even wore fascinators and put on their best frocks. The residents enjoyed feeling like they were at the races and the inventive way of the staff being the jockeys and horses made everyone giggle. One of the residents was crying tears of joy as she reminisced on having a horse that looked similar to Molly.
Our activity lead Diane wanted to host this event to bring the ‘races’ to the residents. This is the first event of its kind for The Amwell and Diane now plans to host a Golf Day for the gents and a vintage car day also.
It's important to us that we not only provide residents with a varied activities programme, but that we also ensure that the activities we provide meet their interests, stimulate them, and provide them with memorable experiences.
We like to host activities that are also inclusive for all our residents, but we place a great focus on ensuring our residents receive sensory and reminiscence experiences as this can really support their overall wellbeing.
