Continue Doing What You Love at The Amwell – Viv’s Story
When Viv joined us at The Amwell Care Home in Melton Mowbray in 2020, she was recovering from a fall at home, which had resulted in a full hip replacement. This significant change understandably impacted her confidence, leaving her feeling anxious about moving around independently and returning to the active lifestyle she had once enjoyed.
Having lived in Melton Mowbray all her life, maintaining her connection to the local community was very important to Viv. However, following her fall and the challenges brought by the COVID-19 pandemic, she found herself increasingly isolated. Our team were there from day one and focused on providing a safe and understanding environment where Viv could gradually regain her confidence at her own pace.
Regaining Independence and Rediscovering Joy
With consistent encouragement and personalised support from our care team, Viv began to rebuild both her physical strength and emotional well-being. Over time, she regained the confidence to move safely around her room and the wider environment as she knew our team was always on hand whenever she needed support.
A key part of Viv’s journey has been reconnecting with the local community she knows and loves. With support from our team, she has been able to enjoy trips to local shops, cafés and familiar places such as Sainsbury’s and Starbucks. These outings have played an important role in restoring her independence and sense of normality. As her confidence has grown, these visits have become something she truly looks forward to.
Kathy, our Receptionist, shared, “Seeing Viv return from the local community after a good trip is brilliant, she always comes back feeling reinvigorated, and is only too happy to give us a haul of all her bits and bobs she picked up on her travels, and what friends she saw out and about.”
Within the home, Viv has built meaningful friendships and enjoys a lifestyle that reflects her preferences. She shared with us that she often values quieter moments and wishes to dine in a more private environment, so our team took the time to turn one of our smaller lounges into a private dining area for her. This is fully equipped with everything she needs to enjoy her meals in a setting that feels serene and restaurant-style. Some other residents will often join Viv for a quiet Sunday lunch, and each day a different member of our team will join her to offer companionship and someone to talk to.
Jordan, our Senior Carer, shared, “Viv isn’t always a fan of a lot of hustle and bustle, and likes to eat quietly in the small lounge with her friends who she has made along the way. She is always happy to see the small lounge set out for her each day, so she is able to enjoy a good natter with her friends in a quiet space. This has really helped her to develop and maintain connections with other residents and has prevented Viv from becoming lonely. It’s lovely to see.”
Viv also enjoys taking part in activities such as chair Zumba and group exercise sessions, which have helped her to stay active and engaged. Her growing confidence has enabled her to not only enjoy life at The Amwell but also to support and encourage other residents. She also recently celebrated her 80th birthday, where we threw a large party for her and presented a 2-tier cake covered in tiaras and crowns. This was a truly special day for Viv, and highlights the strong sense of community and tailored support we offer here at The Amwell.
