Welcoming the Chinese New Year

The Amwell Care Home recently came alive with the colours, flavours, and traditions of Chinese New Year, as residents, staff, and families gathered to welcome the Year of the Dragon. Our home was transformed with vibrant red and gold decorations, symbolising luck and prosperity, with lanterns, banners, and beautiful displays adding to the festive atmosphere.

The celebrations were packed with activities designed to immerse residents in the spirit of the occasion. We began with a lively Chinese-themed quiz that brought residents together in teams to display their knowledge and encourage some friendly competition. We followed it up with a chance to try different authentic Chinese cuisine—including spring rolls, dumplings, and sweet-and-sour chicken which quickly became a highlight of the day. Many residents even tried using chopsticks for the first time, sharing plenty of laughter and encouragement along the way. A particularly touching moment came when one of our residents shared that at 93 years old, was experiencing Chinese food for the first time which is proof that new adventures can be enjoyed at any stage of life.

Crafting red "good luck" envelopes was another much-loved activity, with each envelope containing a gold coin, symbolising prosperity and happiness for the year ahead. Our residents embraced the tradition and enjoyed both the creativity and the meaningful gesture behind it. Fortune cookies added an extra element of surprise and joy to the festivities as each revealed a special message of wisdom or encouragement.

We took the time to invite the loved ones of our residents to join in the celebrations which created a true sense of family and community that was felt by all. It is important to us here at The Amwell that our residents feel at home, as well as have the opportunity to connect with their families and create lifelong memories. Engaging in global traditions like Chinese New Year not only brings joy but also encourages social interaction, stimulates the mind, and fosters cultural appreciation. For both residents and staff, it was a day filled with fun, laughter, and new memories—one that truly embodied the warmth and community spirit of The Amwell Care Home.
